Cisco Duo is an access-management and multi-factor authentication service, part of Cisco's security portfolio. It delivers MFA, single sign-on, passwordless authentication, device-trust posture checks, and risk-based authentication. Duo is known for fast deployment and a clean end-user experience, and is packaged in three editions: Essentials, Advantage, and Premier. It protects access to applications but does not manage the underlying entitlements those applications grant.
SailPoint Identity Security is an identity governance and administration platform. It automates joiner-mover-leaver lifecycle events, provisions and deprovisions access, runs periodic access certifications, and enforces separation-of-duties policy across more than 1,100 connected applications. Its purpose is to ensure access is appropriate and auditable, which is a different problem from authenticating a login.
Duo's strengths are at the authentication boundary. It supports a wide range of authenticators including push, hardware keys, and passwordless, evaluates device health before granting access, and applies adaptive policies based on risk signals such as location and device posture. As of 2026 the editions are Essentials at about $6 per user per month, Advantage at about $6 per user per month, and Premier at about $9 per user per month, with a free tier for very small teams and a 30-day trial. Pricing predictability and a low entry point are part of Duo's appeal, although the most advanced zero-trust and identity-intelligence features sit in the top edition.
SailPoint does not publish list pricing. It is sold per managed identity across tiered suites and negotiated, with per-identity rates declining at scale. The licence is only part of the cost: connector configuration, role design, and certification setup add a significant services component. The pricing contrast is stark, with Duo a transparent low-per-user-cost tool and SailPoint a quote-based enterprise platform whose total cost of ownership is materially higher.
Duo is one of the faster security tools to deploy. Basic MFA can be live within hours to days, with full zero-trust access policies taking weeks depending on application coverage and device-trust requirements. That speed makes Duo a common first step for organisations hardening authentication. SailPoint, by contrast, is a multi-month programme: connector onboarding, role mining, and certification design are organisation-specific and benefit from trained administrators or an integrator.
On fit, Duo suits any organisation that needs strong, usable MFA and a path toward zero trust, from mid-market to large enterprise. SailPoint suits regulated enterprises that must govern and certify access across a large application estate. Because the two address different layers, the practical decision for most buyers is not Duo or SailPoint but how to sequence and integrate them within an identity programme.
