Independent comparison for enterprise buyers. Updated May 2026.
Quick verdict: Choose Microsoft Entra External ID when the customer identity stack lives inside Azure, when Azure tenants and Microsoft 365 already drive the identity backbone, or when the buyer wants CIAM under the same vendor as workforce identity at no incremental Entra licensing cost. Choose Auth0 when developer experience is decisive, when broad SDK and framework coverage matters, when B2B multi-tenancy via organisations is core, or when adaptive MFA, bot detection, and customisable Universal Login flows at scale are required. The differentiator is buyer profile and stack alignment.

Microsoft Entra External ID is Microsoft's customer identity platform, replacing the prior Azure AD B2C product. It is multi-tenant SaaS in Azure, supports SAML, OIDC, OAuth 2.0, social identity providers, custom policies, and branded user flows. It integrates tightly with Azure App Service, Functions, API Management, and the Microsoft Graph for downstream user data. Entra External ID is targeted at product teams building consumer or B2B applications already hosted in Azure.
Auth0, acquired by Okta in 2021 and now branded Okta Customer Identity Cloud, was built developer-first. It provides SDKs across most languages and frameworks, a Universal Login page that can be themed or replaced with embedded forms, Rules and Actions for serverless extensibility, organisations for B2B multi-tenancy, fine-grained authorisation (FGA), adaptive MFA, attack protection, and a polished developer dashboard. Auth0 is the default that product engineering teams reach for in greenfield deployments.
On B2B identity Auth0's organisations feature provides per-organisation login pages, branding, federation, member management, and tenant-aware access control. Entra External ID's equivalent — multi-tenant guest access — is functional but less polished for SaaS vendors that need a per-tenant CIAM experience. This is the most common reason B2B SaaS vendors choose Auth0 over Entra External ID.
For B2C deployments at large scale both platforms handle the throughput. Entra External ID benefits from Azure's global footprint and Microsoft enterprise sales relationships; Auth0 benefits from broader developer awareness, more SDK examples, and a deeper extensibility model via Actions. Adaptive MFA, bot detection, and breached password detection are stronger on Auth0 in 2026.
Compliance and certifications are broadly comparable: both carry ISO 27001, SOC 2, GDPR, HIPAA-ready, and FedRAMP capabilities through their respective cloud parents. Entra External ID inherits FedRAMP High via Azure Government; Auth0 has FedRAMP Moderate and isolated tenants for regulated buyers.
Microsoft Entra External ID is priced per monthly active user with a free tier covering the first 50,000 MAUs and incremental pricing of approximately $0.00325 per MAU above that, plus per-authentication charges for some advanced features. Azure consumption (App Service, API Management, Functions) used to host related application logic is billed separately. For Azure-native applications, Entra External ID can be substantially cheaper than Auth0 at large MAU scale.
Auth0 is priced per monthly active user with separate B2C and B2B tiers, starting with a free developer tier and stepping into Essentials, Professional, and Enterprise. B2C deployments at 100,000+ MAU typically cost $1,500–$10,000 per month list depending on tier, advanced features, and adaptive MFA. B2B Essentials and Professional bundles add per-organisation charges. The buying-side caveat is that Auth0 list pricing escalates at MAU thresholds and feature tiers; model peak MAU and the planned feature stack rather than current MAU. Pricing as of May 2026, list pricing before enterprise discount.
Choose Microsoft Entra External ID when the application is hosted in Azure, when the buyer is Microsoft-aligned and Entra is already the workforce identity choice, when cost at very large MAU scale is a primary driver, when Azure Government or FedRAMP High is required, or when Microsoft enterprise licensing already covers most of the stack. Entra External ID also fits product teams that prioritise Azure-native integration over best-of-breed developer experience.
Choose Auth0 when developer experience is decisive, when SDK and framework coverage matter, when B2B multi-tenancy via organisations is a core requirement, when adaptive MFA, bot detection, and breached password detection at scale are needed, or when product engineering rather than IT operates the identity stack. Auth0 is also the typical choice when the application sits outside Azure or when the buyer wants the cleanest extensibility model via Rules, Actions, and Forms.
