Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) is Microsoft's cloud identity and access platform. It underpins sign-in to Microsoft 365 and Azure and to thousands of integrated applications, providing single sign-on, conditional access, multi-factor authentication, and, through the Entra ID Governance add-on, entitlement management and lifecycle workflows. For organisations already invested in Microsoft, Entra ID is the natural identity layer.
Saviynt Enterprise Identity Cloud (EIC) is a vendor-neutral converged identity platform. It combines identity governance and administration, application access governance, third-party access governance, data access governance, and native privileged access in one cloud system across more than 25 regional data centres. Saviynt is designed for organisations that need deep governance across many different systems regardless of vendor.
Entra ID's strength is integration and value within the Microsoft ecosystem. Conditional access, identity protection, and privileged identity management are tightly woven into Microsoft 365 and Azure, and much of the capability is bundled with E5 licensing, which improves the economics for existing Microsoft customers. Its governance, delivered via the Entra ID Governance add-on, has matured but is generally lighter than dedicated governance platforms once you move beyond Microsoft-centric estates.
Saviynt's strength is governance breadth and neutrality. It governs access across heterogeneous on-premises and cloud applications, models risk and separation-of-duties, and converges governance with privileged and data-access controls. Microsoft Entra ID has transparent per-user pricing. As of 2026, Entra ID P1 is about $6 per user per month and P2 about $9, with the Entra ID Governance add-on at roughly $7 per user per month requiring P1 or P2. Many organisations already hold these rights through Microsoft 365 E3 or E5 bundles, which makes Entra ID highly cost-efficient where the licensing is sunk. Buyers should confirm which governance features need the separate add-on.
Saviynt is quote-based, priced per identity and by module. As with other converged platforms, the subscription understates total cost because configuration and integration work are substantial, and buyers report total cost running well above the headline figure. Saviynt can be more economical than buying separate governance and privileged tools, but it is rarely cheaper than Entra ID for an organisation that already owns Microsoft licensing covering its identity needs.
Entra ID deploys quickly inside a Microsoft estate because the identity directory already exists; enabling conditional access, MFA, and governance features is largely configuration. Saviynt is a longer programme, with buyers consistently citing a steep learning curve, lengthy setup, and uneven support with documentation gaps. The implementation gap reflects Entra ID building on an existing platform versus Saviynt deploying broad cross-system governance from scratch.
On fit, choose Entra ID when the organisation is Microsoft-centric and wants efficient identity and access tightly integrated with its productivity and cloud stack. Choose Saviynt when governance must span many vendors uniformly, when converged IGA, AAG, and PAM are required, and when independence from a single platform vendor is a priority. The decision usually follows the organisation's broader platform strategy.
