Overview
Manhattan Active Supply Chain is the cloud-native supply chain commerce suite from Manhattan Associates, an Atlanta-based vendor that has been one of the dominant warehouse management system (WMS) providers since the 1990s. The Active platform was launched in 2018 as a rebuilt microservices architecture that replaces the legacy Manhattan SCALE and Manhattan WMOS code bases. It covers warehouse management, transportation management, order management, point of sale, and store fulfillment.
The platform is positioned at retailers and brands with complex omnichannel fulfillment requirements, large 3PLs operating multi-tenant warehouses, and manufacturing companies with significant distribution operations. Manhattan's strength has historically been in execution rather than planning, and Active continues that tradition. The Active platform is delivered as a versionless SaaS on Google Cloud with continuous updates, eliminating the upgrade projects that characterised the previous on-premise products. Manhattan ActiveWorks is the integration framework used to extend and connect Active applications.

Strengths
- Best-in-segment warehouse management functional depth, particularly for complex 3PL and retail DCs
- Cloud-native microservices architecture is genuinely modern, not a lift-and-shift
- Versionless SaaS eliminates traditional WMS upgrade projects
- Strong order streaming and distributed order management for omnichannel
- Mature labor management and engineered standards modules
- Active customer community and well-regarded annual Momentum conference
Limitations
- Migration from legacy Manhattan SCALE or WMOS is effectively a re-implementation
- Planning capabilities are limited compared to dedicated planning vendors
- Total cost of ownership is at the upper end of the WMS market
- Customisation requires Manhattan-specific ActiveWorks skills in short supply
- Microservices architecture increases integration testing burden for complex scenarios
